Koh Samui Temples- a historic symbol of a proud heritage
Originally a self sufficient isolated community, it was discovered by tourists in the early 70 s. Since then it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. Considered the third largest island making up Thailand, it is situated in the Surat Thani Province.
Since the introduction of Buddhism to Thailand it has become the most prominent religion in the country. To mark their devotion to the Lord Buddha many elaborate, ornately decorated temples have been erected to honour the teachings and wisdom of the Lord Buddha.
Taking a tour through Koh Samui travellers will find many Chinese and Buddhist temples dotted throughout the island. The most famous of these is the Big Buddha or Phra Yai as it is known locally. Comprised of a 12 meter tall dazzling golden Buddha statue, it can be seen for several kilometres in either direction. On the grounds are a multitude of shrines housing other intricate versions

of Buddha. The market within the premises sells charms and garlands for visitors to use in their prayers and to facilitate good luck.
Within the unofficial capital of Koh Samui, Nathon, are mainly retail and service oriented businesses, but as a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city lays the Hainan Chinese Temple. One of the oldest buildings on the island, the temple is garnished in bright colours with two fierce golden lions protecting its entrance. Situated within its walls lies a tranquil enclosed garden where visitors can come relax and pray. Within the temple is an alter for lighting candles and praying.
In a slightly more elusive location, lies the Buddha Footprints. After conquering the 163 steps to get to the shrine where four footprints have been painstakingly engraved on each other, visitors are treated to the most spectacular panoramic view of the island.
